ShipMate Gunner
"Gunner is a 9 year old yellow English labrador, although he looks more white than yellow… There are 2 photos of Gunner laying on the boat. I love th background in the picture with Gunner's front legs hanging off the seat…He and his dad restored that boat so I think it's a little special to them :)"

A Painting Progression, TALI
I hope you're enjoying the "tail end" of Summer. The increasing number of my custom painting list indicates that people are already thinking ahead to Winter --and to Christmas/Christmas gifts.
So, I thought I'd post a winter scene and share this painting progression for TALI's custom oil portrait painting. Rotti Tali, enjoying life (& the snow) is a rescue dog now in a loving family who think the world of her and her Rotti "sister" Tamah.
(Please scroll down to see the painting progression.)

The 12 Charlie's
Do you ever rely on your computer to find some specific file, folder or image? When I typed in "Charlie", my computer pulled up all these Charlie's I have painted (so far) since 2007. So, I put together this image montage. (Really, I thought I had painted more Charlie's over the years than these 12... but the computer can't be wrong, Right?)
Various people & pets named Charlie I have gotten to know while painting their custom oil portraits. (Most are details of larger paintings.) |

A Painting Progression: Charlie
I happen to be working on 2 relatively large paintings right now, so again, I thought it would be fun to also share this painting as it progresses. Handsome Charlie is a German Shorthaired Pointer (a regal fellow who happens to have a thing for socks).
I'll post each new photo as the painting progresses just above the previous photo. Enjoy!

The finished painting! (with details) CHARLIE, approx. 38x26", custom oil portrait painting by puci |
|
The chair is finished. (3-18-14) |
Details of part of the water-bowl & bottom right of the hardwood floor. (Not the best photos/sorry about the flash.) The wall is finished too. (3-16-14) |
This is the final lay-in of overall color before the painting comes to life with more precise color tones, highlights & shadows, brushwork, etc. (3-12-14) |
It's full-speed-ahead with Charlie's painting now! A Prussian Blue mixture took the helm for the wall base-color. I'll add a light layer/scumbling of a warmer tone on top when the blue oil is dry. |
Ahhh, a little color! (and applied carefully so as not to not erase any of those guidelines). (3-7-14) |
After projecting/penciling-in the line-drawing onto the masonite, I still had to go over all those precise lines with a ruler to make some corrections. (3-4-14) |
I've been priming & sanding the painting surface, a strong sheet of masonite approximately 26x38"x1/4" thick.(2-26-14) |
The finished painting will resemble this color composition. It'll be an essential guide when I'm painting. (2-25-14) |
These are the reference photos to be used to piece together the composition for the painting. |

A Painting Progression: Karen's Kids
Hi, I thought it'd be fun to post the progress of this particular painting:
• 21 x 53 inches
• featuring 5 beloved pets
• wrap-around (the painting to extend around to the sides)
I'll post each new photo as the painting progresses just above the previous. Enjoy!

THE FINISHED PAINTING !!! |
Sutega's oil portrait is also finished. She is a beautiful Pit & Boxer mix. |
Cute little Tessa is now finished. Tessa is a Blue Healer (Australian Cattle dog). (3-5-14) |
Morgan's face is finished; Her body just needs a bit more touching up. The background & some of the foreground has been made more vivid too. (3-3-14) |
Now the kids have a bit more contrast & detail. Next step: to finish each. Morgan will lead the fun. (2-28-14) |
These, btw, are the main reference photos to be used for the panting. |
The background (area behind the 5 cuties) is finished.... maybe. (2-24-14) |
Now we're beginning to get somewhere... This is the second pass, painting in a bit more detail. (2-20-14) |
The first lay-in of some color, painted with oil paints thinned out only with paint thinner. (2-17-14) |
This is me (bad hair day, btw) penciling in the lines as they are projected onto the primed (w/gesso) canvas. (2-15-14) |
Canvas is now stretched and stapled in place. (2-10-14) |
Here it is, the bare bones of the painting: the deluxe stretcher bars w/cross braces @ 21" x 53" x 1.5"wide. (2-10-14) |
